Saint Philip AME
Saint Philip A.M.E. Church was established on this date in 1865, the oldest A.M.E. Church in Georgia.
It was organized by the Reverend A. L. Stanford in Savannah, Georgia, at the close of the American Civil War. Later that year, Sunday school began. In September 1896, a storm demolished the building, and the church was a mass of ruins. During its interim, the Odd Fellow’s Hall was secured for worship. Saint Philip officers and members of Trinity Methodist Church moved to purchase property on West Broad and Charles Streets. In 1905, Saint Philip began a rally to raise funds for the erection of the Greater Saint Philip A.M.E. Church.
In 1909, the present modern brick structure, designed by a Black architect, was completed. In 1990, the Reverend Gregory Vaughn Eason, Sr., led the ministry of Saint Philip. Through Reverend Eason’s vision and leadership, in 2000, the parsonage adjoining the church was converted into Child Development Center. A new parsonage was purchased, and the Outreach of Faith cable telecast was. A Media Ministry A Web Site Ministry, an enhanced Music Ministry, which now includes a Praise Team and a Youth Liturgical Dance Group, and an Outreach Ministry, are combined with numerous improvements to the sanctuary and the collective faith of the Saint Philip family.
