Texas College Begins Classes

*The founding of Texas College in 1894 is celebrated on this date. One of over 100 American Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Texas College is located in Tyler, Texas, 100 miles west of Dallas and 90 miles east of Shreveport.

It was founded in 1894 by a group of ministers of the Christian Episcopal Church. The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church governs its affiliation. Texas College is a private, baccalaureate degree-granting, liberal arts, and co-educational institution. The school offers 13 baccalaureate degree programs within three divisions.

Majors may be declared in Art, Biology, Business Administration, Computer Science, English, Education, History, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Political Science, Social Work, and Sociology. The College offers one associate of arts degree in Early Childhood Education.

Texas College’s Certificate of Authority awards degrees from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and their ratio of faculty to students is 1:8. Texas College’s current president is Dr. Billy C. Hawkins.
