Oakwood College, UNCF School Opens

On this date, we celebrate the 1896 founding of Oakwood College, a certified United Negro College Fund (UNCF) institution.

For over 100 years, Oakwood has provided students the opportunity to learn in preparation for service to the community, country, and world. The Southern Accrediting Association of Colleges and Schools and the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Department of Education regionally accredit the college. It offers a liberal arts curriculum in a religious atmosphere.

Oakwood College rests on nearly 1,000 acres in Huntsville in northwest Alabama. It is nestled in the beautiful Tennessee Valley at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Huntsville is home to the Marshall Space Center and is recognized as one of America's most progressive cities.

The diverse mix of students from many foreign countries and over 40-star students to the richness of different cultures. Oakwood College fosters the development of self-esteem, respect for others, and the required skills to be socially adaptable and globally successful.  Notable Alumni include Musicians Brian McKnight and Little Richard.
