Mable Bailey
*Mable Bailey's birth is celebrated on this date in 1939. She is a Black musician, teacher, and composer. She was born in Canton, Mississippi, and moved to Oakland, California, with her family as a child.
She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1963 with a double major in education and music. She began composing while a graduate student at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque and studied composition at the College of Holy Names in Oakland, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and the University of Denver. She taught in the Denver Public Schools from 1976 until her retirement.
Bailey composed choral, vocal, and instrumental music; she retired from her job with Denver Public Schools in 2007.
