Kermit Moore

*Kermit Moore was born on this date in 1929.  He was a Black conductor, cellist, and composer.

Moore was born in Akron, Ohio. While still in high school, he studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In Manhattan, he studied the cello with Felix Salmond at the Juilliard School while simultaneously pursuing a master's degree in composition and musicology at New York University.

In 1964, he married composer Dorothy Rudd Moore. Moore was one of the founders of the Symphony of the New World, the first racially integrated orchestra in the United States. He founded the Society of Black Composers with his wife and others. He was also a member and board member of the Musicians Club of New York. Kermit Moore died on November 11, 2013.
