*Hartford Burwell was born on this date in 1885.  He was a Black doctor. 

From Raleigh, North Carolina, Hartford Ranson Burwell attended Hampton Institute, Virginia, and subsequently graduated from Shaw University in Raleigh. He received his MD degree from Howard University in 1912. He interned at Freedmen's Hospital, Washington, DC, and was on the staff from 1915 to 1948 as an instructor in gynecology and clinical surgery.

At the time of retirement, he held the faculty rank of associate clinical professor of surgery. Dr. Burwell established the Burwell Hospital, a 12-bed facility, in 1938 and operated there for 14 years. His wife, Annie Murdock Burwell, a dietician, and his daughter, Cornelia, a registered nurse, assisted him. Mrs. Burwell died in 1969.

Dr. Burwell held membership in the American Society of Abdominal Surgeons and was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He also served as vice-dean of the College of Medicine from 1944 to 1946. Dr. Hartford Ranson Burwell died on November 14, 1978, at 93.
