Harry V. Burns, Activist born

*Harry Burns was born on this date in 1922.  He was a Black civil rights leader.   From San Antonio, Texas, Harry Victory Burns was named by his mother for Victory Day.

Burns served during WW2 in the U.S. Army.  After discharge during the 1940s and 1950s, Burns was the San Antonio NAACP Branch president. He was associated with Martin Luther King and Thurgood Marshall during the civil rights movement.

He went on to organize marches throughout the city along with others such as Rev. Claude Black, Charles Hudspeth, G J Sutton, Ethel Minor, and others.  Harry Burns died on May 27, 2000. He is buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.
