Edward Joseph Dwight Sr.
*Edward Joseph Dwight Sr. was born on this date in 1905. He was a Black baseball player and chemist.
He graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He played second base and centerfield in the Negro League. He played mostly for the Kansas City Monarchs from 1924 to 1937.
After retiring from baseball, he worked as a chemist at Kansas State Grain Laboratory. In 1946, the Dwight family opened Dwight's Soda Grill in Kansas City, Kansas. Dwight worked as a bus driver for the Kansas City Monarchs into the team's later years. In 1962, Dwight's son, Eddie Dwight Jr., became the first Black person selected by NASA for training as an American astronaut.
He would later go on to become a sculptor. Some of his subjects have included Negro league baseball players. Edward Dwight Sr. died at 70 in Kansas City, Kansas, on November 27, 1975.
